The 35th District delegation wrapped up a tough legislative session for the Republicans, but Sen. Drew MacEwen, R-Shelton, and Reps. Dan Griffey and Travis Couture, both Republicans from Allyn, say they brought back some big wins for Mason County.

All three lawmakers said the big disappointment in the session was the “Millionaires’ Tax,” signed Monday by Gov. Bob Ferguson, that imposes a 9.9% tax on personal income over $1 million annually.

…Couture and MacEwen warned about the bill’s emergency clause, or necessity clause, that allows the law to take effect upon signature of the governor, bypassing the standard 90-day waiting period.

The larger concern is the abuse of the emergency clause,” MacEwen agreed.

He said there’s a time to use the clause, such as when a bridge collapses. “You have to get things done to prepare that bridge right away, you pass a bill with an emergency clause on there because it’s necessary for the safety and function of government,” he said.

“It’s not to shut you and your voice down. Whether you agree with the legislation or not, that’s what it’s become,” MacEwen said. “Republican or Democrat, I think it’s wrong.”
